Akaturiaph didn't care much for chores. She would much rather spend her time leisurely with K'ii playing and talking than do trivial tasks that weren't as fun. But the elder simourv and humans expected it of her and all the other Winglets, and K'ii had asked her to, so she had complied with their wishes. She did not speak much with the other Winglets that often worked beside them, other than a few irate remarks. K'ii was always with her, though, and they had the sanctuary of the mind in which to converse. Their chores, which they had been doing since near the first days of her life, were to carry building materials to various sites in the Eyrie, and assist in whatever way they could with construction and repair. At first there was little she could do, being clumsy and young. Now that she was older, more powerful, more was expected of her. It felt good to have people recognize her ability.
It was the same near daily routine. She was in harness, and that harness was fastened securely to a large-ish wooden cart filled with various construction materials and tools. Lengths of wood worked and raw, hammers, nails, chisels. Things she had come to recognize even though they had no real meaning or use to her. She pulled the cart filled with these things carefully along behind her to wherever they were needed that particular day, and K'ii would unload the material and start work on whatever it was. She would hand him things out of the back of the cart, or occasionally hold something in place, or provide him a boost somewhere high.
Today was like any of those other days. She stalked smoothly across the canyon-bed, the cart behind her a negligible burden, and otherwise unnoticeable save for the faint pull on her harness, and the annoying way it got in the way of the natural sweep of her tail as she walked. K'ii walked companionably beside her, having to jog lightly to keep up with her broad steps. He was dressed in sensible work clothes, and his red hair was pulled back into its usual messy ponytail. He was laughing and smiling, which put a small spring in her step. Her rider only really laughed or smiled when it was just the two of them, and that idea pleased her. It seemed right after all. He was hers.
"This will be easy." K'ii stated confidently, shading his eyes against the noon sun to get a view of their destination. A night ago, one of the elder simourv had gotten particularly playful with their food. Their game of cat and mouse had ended with the terrified steer crashing through the paddock fence, rendering a section of it broken and severely leaning. Though the green Winglet had little skills in carpentry coming into these chores, after spending over seven months now doing them almost daily, he had picked up quite a few things. "We'll be done in two hours, tops. Then we can go riding."
He turned and smiled at his simourv as he said this, and Akaturiaph offered a sidelong glance and a somewhat dismissive whuff of agreement. Tch, you're lucky you don't weigh that much, or I'd make you walk. She grumbled, though her snippy voice lacked all of its usual anger. Riding did sound fun to her. She liked to run with him with her, to explore their home, and have him so near. Today was a good day anyway. So far it looked like only they were assigned to this particular chore, and hopefully no one else would show up. No one was in sight, so she could relax. They'd finish early, and then go play. She was happy. For now.
