It was a rather strange thought, K'ean mused, that the next lesson after this one his winglets would be learning to fly. Things had just been moving along so quickly; all three were practically growing before his eyes. Today they would be learning the formations that would carry them through in a battle with the koxi, even if they were currently still ground-bound. It was a strange thought and a gratifying one, because it wouldn't be long until the Eyrie had more full-fledged riders, even if his little Bravo class only comprised three members. Them, in addition to the Alphas who would be graduating sometime soon, made a grand total of twenty-eight riders when the Bravos eventually graduated in eight months or so. Am'ra of Tawny Philomeph, Ma'ro of Blue Hummiph and Ev'yn of Green Clymeph, all riders in their own right. It was enough to make the redrider feel quite proud.
Above him, the shadow that passed over the canyon bed snorted in his mind with a voice like coarse gravel. Careful, Mine. Seronaph warned amusedly, If you don't get your head out of the clouds soon, you'll float away and I certainly won't bother catching you. Seronaph turned to circle the canyon, amber eyes fixed on the little spot that was his rider, as they made their way to the canyon's northern point in the chilly morning light. K'ean didn't even bother to look up at the simourv that he knew was circling like an overly-large bord of prey, but just allowed his amusement to filter into his mental tone. You wouldn't know what to do without me, Seph, admit it. An indignant huff met his teasing words at the implication that the red was no longer an independent creature. Of course, he had never actually been without His's presence, barring that short period of tme after he'd hatched, so Seronaph would not actually know what to do if His rider were not with him. But it was the principle of the thing.
Just call them, Seph. Full riding gear. K'ean said, turning his head to roll his eyes unseen at the large red's form. For another moment, Seronaph was airborne as he sent his regular morning summons to the winglets, possibly rousing them from their beds at this hour of the day. Bravos, it's lesson time. You'll be doing some riding today, so it's full riding gear for you. Then, message delivered, the large red circled once more before landing neatly beside the rock pool to wait, while K'ean himself leaned against a rock not far away.
It wasn't too long a wait before their three Winglets arrived with their simourvs, and the redrider took a moment to glance over their riding gear, making sure that nothing was out of place or missing. Nothing was, so he nodded a greeting to them, somewhat sympathetic to their having been woken up so early and yet at the same time not sympathetic at all. Depending on what shifts they pulled after they graduated, they'd have to get up at the appointed time on the dot like clockwork. It wasn't an all too pleasant experience, but you got used to it over time. "Morning, winglets. Today you'll be learning the formations that you'll eventually use with the rest of your squads to fight the xymokoxi." All joking with Seronaph aside, this was serious business. "It's actually rare to find one koxi on its own. They fight and hunt in packs, like dogs, only infinitely more dangerous." K'ean paused to survey the there wingletpairs once more before nodding briskly. "Mount up." he said, turning to do just that himself as he pulled himself onto his simourv's back, fastening himself in sturdily with the riding straps.
From there, Seronaph took over the lecture, seeing as this was more an instruction of the simourv chicks than the riders. It's important to stay in touch with your squadmates at all times, so that you know immediately if there is a change of direction or something is about to affect your group. He instructed seriously as he rose fluidly into a standing position. Large amber eyes were narrow and focused intently on each young simourv in turn. You will learn the formations for attack, rescue, retreat and others, but for now we will start with the basics. A 'V' shape. Philomeph, for now you will act as point for the V. Hummiph, behind and to her right, Clymeph, behind to her left. The larger simourv is always the point, because they can better handle the force of the wind. Smaller simourvs would fly just behind and beneath the wings, where the air currents are easier to navigate. He snorted briefly, gaze flashing to their as-yet-unfledged wings. For now, though, you will run the drills, since you cannot yet fly.
With a rolling of his shoulders and a last once over of the winglets in position, the red sprang into the air, calling as his wings clawed for a current, Come on! And then he was winging down the canyon, slow enough that the winglets could keep pace without too much trouble just yet. He began with basic orders, to turn left and right and make a loop, and slowly began to link them faster and faster and faster. It wasn't a particularly graceful event to watch, especially not for an experienced simourv and rider, but that was also to be expected. This was their first time, after all. They had plenty of time to improve and practice before they had to put this to good use. And in the mean time, Seronaph just kept calling the changes, and hoped for the best.
